Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. How many types of awnings are there and what are they?

A1. There are two types of awnings, retractable and fixed frame. Retractable awnings retract and extend either by an electric motor or a manual crank arm. It is recommended that a motorized awning have a manual crank override in the event of a power outage.

Fixed frame awnings are made from galvanized steel or aluminum framing and are typically welded frames. Patio awnings are grouped with fixed frames but these awnings are generally assembled using specific awning hardware

Q2. Do I have to take my awnings down in the winter?

A2. Most retractable awnings stay up for the winter and retract into a hood or enclosure that is attached against the building. Patio awnings typically have the covers removed but the framework stays up through the winter. Most welded frame commercial awnings are built for year-round installation.

Q3. Can I leave my retractable awning out in the wind and rain?

A3. Retractable awnings can be left out in light breezes but it is recommended they be taken in during high winds. Retractable awnings have a pitch or slope built in which can be adjusted. With the proper pitch, rain should not collect to any significant degree. Again, it is best to follow the manufacturer's guidelines and warnings for the use of retractable awnings under wind and rain conditions.

Q4. What kind of fabric will my awning be covered with?

A4. Type of fabric used will depend on what type of awning you choose and its usage. Most awnings are covered with a woven acrylic fabric material. However, many commercial awnings are covered with a special vinyl material that can be backlit to create a "glow" from the awning. Regardless of the material you choose, there are literally hundreds of colors to choose from. Most quality fabrics carry a minimum 5 year warranty.

Q5. Do I need to clean my awning?

A5. Like any product exposed to outdoor conditions, your awning should be cleaned regularly. Fabric manufacturers have recommended cleaning methods which should be followed. We can also arrange to have your awning fabric cleaned.

Q6. How do I know which awning to choose?

A6. There are several things to consider when choosing the awning that's right for you, such as color, fabric, size, usage, warranty, installation, etc. The best approach is to schedule an appointment to discuss these details so we can recommend the best awning to suite your needs.
